Indonesia

English

In certain beliefs, "Wijayakusuma" is considered a flower with supernatural powers. According to myth, these flowers bloom at night; if one witnesses the blooming process, their wish will come true. This myth grows in Javanese society, where the flower is believed to bring good luck to those who plant it. During the Islamic Mataram kingdom in Surakarta and Yogyakarta, there was a belief that picking the Wijayakusuma flower could bring prosperity to the kingdom's ruler. However, this painting isn't about the myths surrounding the Wijayakusuma flower. Instead, it emerged from an inner experience of observing the Wijayakusuma's beauty in appearance and form. An image appears of two creatures courting flowers at night and dawn, creating a fantasy of seduction amidst the Wijayakusuma into the night to dawn.
